I call this guitar my Swiss Army Guitar. With the original Tex-Mex pickups you could get very different tones just with the 5-way and the magnetic pickups, way more when dialing in some piezo.
Since I play in a classic rock band I wanted to make the whole thing less twangy, so I put SCNs in the bridge and neck along with the Spellbound. Mission accomplished. The Spellbound by itself is very clean and beefy with good sustain. I will use the 3 position a lot, especially when I dial up the distortion. The 2 and 4 positions make a good duck quack attack due to the RWRP. Like it should.
I'm not much of an effects guy. Live I run through a '71 Twin Reverb with the original Lansing D120F speakers, so lots of brightness and clarity. I have one pedal, a Tube Screamer, which I only use on a couple songs. Sounds great with that setup or through my Carvin V3M.
The guitar is silent when not being played and hands off. I have a copper shield on the back of the pick guard. I literally have to put the guitar six inches from the amp power transformer before you hear any hum.
Having the magnet height preset and not adjustable is nice. The alignment with the strings is a little off but not noticeable from the tone or volume. Not surprising considering it's a strat pickup on a tele.
Based on this experience I bet these sound terrific in a strat. I'm really happy. I'm not going to say anything and see if my band mates can tell the difference, because to me it's real obvious.
Thanks, Dave.
